RESUMO

Measuring the size distribution of aerosols typically requires processing a sample, specifically to adjust the particle concentration to an adequate level. Unfortunately, this manipulation can significantly alter the native composition of some aerosols, which can lead to unreliable or even unusable measurements. We demonstrate that coherence-gated dynamic light scattering is suitable to measure the size distribution of native aerosols without the need for sample processing. Another novel aspect of the present work is the first demonstration of these type of localized light-scattering-based measurements in aerial media. Measuring the size distribution reliably in optically dense aerosols is possible thanks to the interferometric amplification of single scattering in an optically isolated, picolitre-sized coherence volume. We carried out proof-of-concept experiments in aerosols from electronic cigarettes, which poses a challenge mainly due to their high concentration, volatility, and hygroscopicity. We generated aerosols using two common moisturizers, propylene glycol and glycerol, and measured their particle size distribution as a function of the burning power. The aerosols generated in the presence of glycerol are more polydisperse and have larger particles with increasing burning power. This unique characterization of native aerosols can provide valuable information for dosimetry and hosting sites in the respiratory system.

RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the work-family interface dynamics in some families. For couples who kept earning a double income during the pandemic, their family demands may entail a loss of psychological resources that affect the work domain. This study explored the intra-individual and inter-individual (crossover) direct and indirect effects of family-to-work conflict (FtoWC) on psychological distress and job satisfaction in a non-probabilistic sample of 860 different-sex dual-earner parents with adolescent children from Temuco and Rancagua, Chile. Mothers and fathers answered an online questionnaire measuring FtoWC, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, and the Overall Job Satisfaction Scale. The data were analyzed using the actor-partner interdependence model with structural equation modeling. Results showed that a higher FtoWC is linked to greater psychological distress and lower job satisfaction in both parents. In contrast, psychological distress is directly linked to lower job satisfaction in fathers. In both fathers and mothers, they and their partners' FtoWC were indirectly linked to lower job satisfaction via the fathers' psychological distress. These findings indicate the need for gender-sensitive social and labor policies aimed at reducing the conflict between family and work to increase job satisfaction in both parents and reduce psychological distress, particularly in fathers.

RESUMO

Anthropogenic Marine Litter (AML) accumulating on beaches causes damage to coastal ecosystems and high costs to local communities. Volunteers sampled AML on 130 beaches along the central and southern East Pacific coasts, with AML densities ranging from 0.46 to 2.26 items m-2 in the different countries. AML composition was dominated by plastics and cigarette butts, the latter especially in Mexico and Chile. The accumulation of AML in the upper zones of the beaches and substantial proportions of cigarette butts, glass and metal pointed mainly to local sources. Statistical modelling of litter sources on continental beaches revealed that tourism, access and related infrastructure (e.g. parking lots) best explained AML densities, while plastic densities were also influenced by the distance from river mouths and national Gross Domestic Product. Large-scale monitoring can be a useful tool to evaluate the effectiveness of public policies that should primarily focus on land sources.

RESUMO

A female infant, born at 37 week 5 days to a mother via induced vaginal delivery for preeclampsia, was prenatally diagnosed with a right aortic arch with vascular ring. On the third day of life, the infant exhibited a bronze-gray coloration, and a direct bilirubin of 1.7 mg/dL was detected. The abdominal ultrasound did not visualize the gallbladder. Clinically, the infant displayed features consistent with Alagille syndrome, including unusual facial appearance, butterfly vertebrae, cardiovascular defects, and cholestasis. The geneticist noted that the mother of the patient also exhibited similar features. Both the infant and the mother were diagnosed with Alagille syndrome, both having the same heterozygous JAG1 gene (NM_000214.2) variant (c.1890_1893del, p.Ile630Metfs*112). We believe that the vascular ring observed in our patient is the first reported instance of a vascular ring associated with Alagille syndrome.

RESUMO

We report on the fabrication and testing of a fiber optics sensor based on multimodal interference effects, which aims at the detection of different types of sweeteners dissolved in water. The device, which has a simple structure, commonly known as the SMS configuration, is built by splicing a segment of commercial-grade, coreless multimode fiber (NC-MMF) between two standard single-mode fibers (SMFs). In this configuration, the evanescent field traveling outside the core of the NC-MMF allows the sensing of the refractive index of the surrounding media, making it possible to detect different levels of sugar concentration. The optical sensor was tested with aqueous solutions of glucose, fructose, and sucrose in the concentration range from 0 wt% to 20 wt% at room temperature. The proposed device exhibits a linear response with a sensitivity of 0.1835 nm/wt% for sucrose, 0.1687 nm/wt% for fructose, and 0.1694 nm/wt% for glucose, respectively, with a sensing resolution of around 0.5 wt%. Finally, we show that, despite having similar concentration behavior, some degree of discrimination between the different sugars can be achieved by assessing their thermo-optical response.

RESUMO

Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams are characterized by an azimuthal index or topological charge (m), associated with the orbital angular momentum, and by a radial index (p), which represents the number of the rings in the intensity distribution. We present a detailed, systematic study of the first-order phase statistics of the speckle fields created when LG beams of different order interact with random phase screens with different optical roughness. The phase properties of the LG speckle fields are studied in both the Fresnel and the Fraunhofer regimes using the equiprobability density ellipse formalism such that analytical expressions can be derived for the phase statistics.

RESUMO

The Theory of Evolution (TE) is the backbone of biology and is the best way to explain the diversity of species that exist on the planet. However, despite all the supporting evidence, TE remains poorly understood and accepted. In this study, the levels of acceptance and understanding of TE were measured, respectively, using the Inventory of Student Evolution Acceptance (I-SEA) and Knowledge of Evolution Exam (KEE) questionnaires, in high school students in Monterrey, Mexico (N = 370). The results show that the acceptance of TE ranges from moderate (90.3 out of 120) to high (3.7 out of 5), depending on the scale with which it is measured, while the level of comprehension is low (4.5 out of 10). Statistical analysis of the data collected reveals that there is a positive relationship between acceptance and understanding of TE (r = 0.34). In addition, the proportions of I-SEA and KEE were evaluated based on several factors, such as religion and educational level of the parents, among others. It was found that the level of education of the parents positively affects the understanding of the basic concepts of TE, while religion is the main factor of negative influence on both acceptance and understanding. Finally, the low comprehension shown in this study suggests a revision and readjustment of the contents that are taught in the upper secondary education curriculum.

RESUMO

Background: Fontan-associated liver disease is a well-known sequela following the Fontan procedure for patients living with single-ventricle heart disease. Pulmonary vasodilators, such as phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, have emerged as a potential therapeutic option for lowering central venous pressures by reducing pulmonary vascular resistance. Method: We performed a single-center retrospective review of Fontan patients who were placed on pulmonary vasodilator therapy with prehemodynamic and posthemodynamic, MR elastography, and histologic assessments. Results: A total of 125 patients with Fontan circulation underwent surveillance with cardiac catheterization during the review period. Fifty-three (42%) patients who did not have increased end-diastolic pressures at the time of cardiac catheterization were started on phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor therapy. Nine patients (17%) underwent posttherapy follow-up catheterization. The mean Fontan pressure decreased from 15.4 ± 3.3 mmHg to 13.3 ± 2.5 mmHg (p=0.026), after initiation of pulmonary vasodilatory therapy. There was no change in end-diastolic pressure, transpulmonary gradient, wedge pressure, pulmonary vascular resistance, cardiac index, or saturation. Eleven patients (21%) underwent pretherapy MR elastography testing with posttherapy follow-up MR elastography. We found no improvement in liver stiffness score following the application of pulmonary vasodilators. Three patients underwent pretherapy and posttherapy liver biopsies, with variable histological changes observed within the hepatic parenchyma. Conclusions: These data demonstrate indeterminate results for the selective use of pulmonary vasodilators but highlight the need for large prospective randomized control trials of pulmonary vasodilator therapies to fully assess the benefit of such therapies in Fontan-associated liver disease.

RESUMO

Optical vortex beams are under considerable scrutiny due to their demonstrated potential for applications ranging from quantum optics to optical communications and from material processing to particle trapping. However, upon interaction with inhomogeneous material systems, their deterministic properties are altered. The way these structured beams are affected by different levels of disturbances is critical for their uses. Here, for the first time, we quantify the degradation of perfect optical vortex beams after their interaction with localized random media. We developed an analytical model that (1) describes how the spatial correlation and the phase variance of disturbance affect the phase distribution across the vortex beams and (2) establishes the regimes of randomness for which the beams maintain the memory of their initial vorticity. Systematic numerical simulations and controlled experiments demonstrate the extent of this memory effect for beams with different vorticity indices.

RESUMO

This paper reports on the refractometric detection of water-adulterated milk using an optical fiber sensor whose principle of operation is based on multimode interference (MMI). The device is manufactured in a simple way by splicing a segment of coreless multimode fiber (NC-MMF) between two single-mode fibers (SMFs); neither functionalization nor deposition of a sensing material is required. MMI takes place in the NC-MMF and, when fed with a broadband spectrum, a transmission peak appears at the output of the MMI device due to its inherent filter-like response, whose position depends on the effective refractive index (RI) of the medium surrounding the NC-MMF. Therefore, when the sensor is immersed in different milk−water mixtures, the peak wavelength shifts according to the RI of the mixture. In this way, adulterated milk can be detected from the wavelength shift of the transmission peak. The system was tested with two commercial brands of milk, and adulterations were clearly distinguished in both cases. In the range of interest, from no dilution up to 50% dilution, the sensor exhibits a linear response with a sensitivity of −0.04251 and −0.03291 nm/%, respectively, for the two samples tested. The measurement protocol is repeatable and allows for locating the peak wavelength within <0.34 nm over several repetitions using different samples with the same concentration. A thermal sensitivity of 0.85 nm/°C was obtained, which suggests that the temperature needs to be maintained as fixed during the measurements. The approach presented can be extended to other scenarios as a quality control tool in beverages for human consumption, showing the advantages of simple construction, high sensitivity, and the potential for real-time monitoring.

RESUMO

Abstract Materialism has been recognized as an important variable in postmodern societies; however, most of the studies on this concept have focused on the adult population. The aim of the present study is to determine the possible association between materialism and life satisfaction, and the possible mediating role of attitudes towards money and peer influence in this association, in a sample of Chilean adolescents. A sample of 1325 Chilean secondary school students completed a questionnaire measuring materialism, attitudes in regards with money, susceptibility to peer influence, and satisfaction with life. First, a confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to validate the scalers. Secondly, a theoretical model was tested using Hayes (2013) SPSS macro, PROCESS. The theoretical model included materialism as the predictor variable, satisfaction with life as the predicted variable, and attitudes towards money and susceptibility to peer influence as mediator variables. Results indicate that materialistic attitudes regarding money strengthens a negative relation between materialism and satisfaction with life. This tendency is not observed in susceptibility to peer influence despite being positively associated with materialism and attitudes regarding money. These findings suggest that the variables materialism and attitudes regarding money play a relevant role in the life satisfaction of Chilean adolescents.

Indicative of various pathologies, blood properties are under intense scrutiny. The hemorheological characteristics are traditionally gauged by bulk, low-frequency indicators that average out critical information about the complex, multi-scale, and multi-component structure. In particular, one cannot discriminate between the erythrocytes contribution to global rheology and the impact of plasma. Nevertheless, in their fast stochastic movement, before they encounter each other, the erythrocytes probe the subtle viscoelasticity of their protein-rich environment. Thus, if these short time scales can be resolved experimentally, the plasma properties could be determined without having to separate the blood components; the blood is practically testing itself. This microrheological description of blood plasma provides a direct link between the composition of whole blood and its coagulability status. We present a parametric model for the viscoelasticity of plasma, which is probed by the erythrocytes over frequency ranges of kilohertz in a picoliter-sized volume. The model is validated both in vitro, using artificial hemo-systems where the composition is controlled, as well as on whole blood where continuous measurements provide real-time information. We also discuss the possibility of using this passive microrheology as an in vivo assay for clinically relevant situations where the blood clotting condition must be observed and managed continuously for diagnosis or during therapeutic procedures at different stages of hemostatic and thrombotic processes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effect of endometrioma surgery on ovarian reserve by measuring anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis included observational studies and randomized clinical trials published in English referenced in MEDLINE, SCOPUS and Cochrane (1982-2019). We included studies that reported AMH levels in the pre and post-operative period of patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery for endometrioma. Preoperative AMH was defined as the baseline AMH; short term AMH was measured no later than a month after surgery; medium term AMH was measured between one and six months after surgery; and long-term AMH was measured six or more months after surgery. RESULTS: Thirty-six studies met the inclusion criteria. A significant decrease was observed in short, medium and long-term post-operative AMH levels when compared with baseline AMH. However, there were no differences between short and long-term post-operative AMH levels, suggesting a non-significant recovery after one year of follow-up. A significant decrease in post-operative AMH was observed in bilateral endometriomas compared with unilateral cases. In addition, patients with endometriomas presented a significant decline in post-operative AMH compared with patients with other benign ovarian conditions. The decrease in post-operative AMH was significantly greater in bilateral cystectomy when compared with vaporization with bipolar energy or laser. We also observed a greater decrease in post-operative AMH with bipolar energy hemostasis compared with suture and hemostatic agents. These results should be taken with caution due to the high heterogeneity of the studies analyzed. CONCLUSIONS: Endometrioma surgery has a deleterious effect on short, medium, and long-term post-operative AMH levels. Bilateral endometriomas and endometriomas greater than 7 cm have been associated with greater decreases in AMH. The mechanical resection of healthy tissue and the inflammatory damage on the ovarian cortex might explain the diminishing of ovarian reserve.

RESUMO

Accessing the colloidal dynamics non-invasively and continuously during the phase transition of a colloidal system is challenging but critical. Here, we demonstrate the use of spatiotemporal coherence-gated light scattering for studying the internal dynamics of drying colloidal droplets. The continuously acquired signal originates from a picoliter-sized volume located at the droplet-substrate interface. The measurement is non-contact, non-invasive, and label free and permits real-time observations of both optical and mechanical changes in the measurement volume. Additionally, some macroscopic descriptors of the drying process can be constructed from the microscopic measurement, providing ample information of the process. Implemented with an endoscopic-like probe, this system can be easily incorporated into the existing drop profiling instruments, which is potential for the full characterization of dynamic colloidal droplets.

RESUMO

Abstract Introduction: The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) is a widely used measure of an individuals' cognitive assessment of subjective well-being. The SWLS has been validated in several contexts and populations, but its cross-cultural measurement invariance in emerging adult samples remains barely explored. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the measurement invariance of the SWLS in university students from Chile and Spain and according to gender. Method: A non-probabilistic sample of 165 university students from Chile (66.7% women, Mage = 21.9, SD = 2.35), and 109 students from Spain (48.6% women; Mage = 22.9, SD = 2.4) completed the SWLS. Results: Using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis, results showed that the SWLS exhibited configural, metric and scalar invariance in the comparison between the Chilean and Spanish student samples and also according to gender. Conclusions: This finding allows for significant latent mean comparisons between cross-cultural samples. Moreover, this study supports the SWLS as a valid instrument which provides data that can inform policies in order to improve the subjective well-being of university students of both genders, both in developed and developing Spanish-speaking countries.

We demonstrate a fiber optics sensing structure for the measurement of the refractive index of liquid samples at multiple spatial locations simultaneously. The sensing architecture is all-fiber and consists of standard single-mode-multimode-single-mode multimodal interference (MMI) devices working in parallel. The spectral response of each MMI device is carefully engineered to have nonoverlapping responses, such that the entire system can be interrogated with a single broadband light source and single optical spectrum analyzer. In proof-of-concept experiments, we tested the proposed system with aqueous saline solutions and binary solutions of water-glycerol and water-ethylene glycol. Our results validate the use of the proposed platform for the simultaneous monitoring of the refractive index of liquid samples at different locations.

RESUMO

We review fiber-based multimode interference (MMI) devices with a particular focus on optical fiber-based sensing applications. The present review complements a recently published, extensive review where the sensing of conventional physical variables such as refractive index, temperature, displacement, and strain was covered. This review focuses on MMI fiber sensors for nonconventional physical variables, including mechanical, electromagnetic, chemical, and optical, covering around fifteen years of work in the field. Finally, by the end of this paper, we also review some new trends of MMI-based schemes based on polymer fibers, for wavelength-locking applications, for retrieving the thermo-optic coefficient of liquid samples, and for measuring the dynamics of complex fluids.

RESUMO

This systematic review of literature and meta-analysis of observational studies reports on perinatal outcomes after frozen embryo transfer (FET). The aim was to determine whether natural cycle frozen embryo transfer (NC-FET) in singleton pregnancies conceived after IVF decreased the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes compared with artificial cycle frozen embryo transfer (AC-FET). Thirteen cohort studies, including 93,201 cycles, met the inclusion criteria. NC-FET was associated with a lower risk of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) (RR 0.61, 95% CI 0.50 to 0.73), preeclampsia (RR 0.47, 95% CI 0.42 to 0.53), large for gestational age (LGA) (RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.90 to 0.96) and macrosomia (RR 0.82, 95% CI 0.69 to 0.97) compared with AC-FET. No significant difference was found in the risk of gestational hypertension and small for gestational age. Secondary outcomes assessed were the risk of preterm birth (RR 0.83, 95% CI 0.79 to 0.88); post-term birth (RR 0.48, 95% CI 0.29 to 0.80); low birth weight (RR 0.84, 95% CI 0.80 to 0.89); caesarean section (RR 0.84, 95% CI 0.77 to 0.91); postpartum haemorrhage (RR 0.39, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.45); placental abruption (RR 0.61, 95% CI 0.38 to 0.98); and placenta accreta (RR 0.18, 95% CI 0.10 to 0.33). All were significantly lower with NC-FET compared with AC-FET. In assessing safety, NC-FET significantly decreased the risk of HDP, preeclampsia, LGA, macrosomia, preterm birth, post-term birth, low birth weight, caesarean section, postpartum haemorrhage, placental abruption and placenta accreta. Further randomized controlled trials addressing the effect of NC-FET and AC-FET on maternal and perinatal outcomes are warranted. Clinicians should carefully monitor pregnancies achieved by FET in artificial cycles prenatally, during labour and postnatally.
